Saturday 5 January: Geldrop(Nl) '57 Fairlane gig in dance school 'Van De Putten'
I live in Belgium not that far from the Dutch border and I do like crossing it into the Netherlands. Flemish people are known for their reserved attitude; Dutch people however are more direct. The nice thing about that is when you are in the Netherlands you are easily spoken to and even asked to join them. And then there's the difference in public. Oddly enough in Belgium it seems like the Rockabilly audience mainly exists of people in the 20 to 40 age group. In the Netherlands, the Rockabilly public is slightly older and broader, varying between 35 and 60. This is evenly so for other concerts besides Rockabilly and each time with adapted dress  ... continue reading

Johnny Cash tribute concert canceled
FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) — A concert marking the 40th anniversary of Johnny Cash's famous concert at Folsom State Prison has been scraped, with the prison and the promoter blaming each other for the cancellation.

The tribute concert, scheduled for Sunday, was to have been staged in the same prison cafeteria where Cash performed before inmates on Jan. 13, 1968. That breakthrough performance became a popular live album.

Prison officials called off the show late Monday, citing problems over filming rights, media access and security concerns.

Promoter Jonathan Holiff claims the cancellation was just another broken promise by  ... continue reading

A little bit of everything
Ok, this is along overdue concert review, but that’s what happens when you go on holiday round the end of the year. So here we go.

First of: Moonshine Reunion 21/12/2007, Kid’s Antwerp

After making our way trough the crowd that was there for the Xmas market, we finally arrived at Kid’s place. It became noticeable very soon that alcohol was being served at the xmas market, since after a few moments the guys that were sitting next to us started falling of their chairs.
Moonshine started playing around 23.00 and by then the bar has filled up nicely, not many familiar faces around but that doesn’t have to be, as long as the  ... continue reading

Hold on to your underwear cos John & Lucy and Koen & Christel, Lost In The Fifties have concocted the second edition of the Rockabilly Roundup, the only 3 day rock and roll weekender festival in the Benelux ! What's new is the new location (the western styled Zwarte Water Ranch in the village of De Mortel near Eindhoven), more bands, more international bands, and a longer party time for the deejays to spin their tunes after the bands have finished their sets. What stays the same is the good natured atmosphere of the event, the stalls at the indoor retro market place, your favorite Belgian and Dutch bands, and the cool cars, hot rods, kustoms  ... continue reading

Pinup girl Jeanne Carmen dies
IRVINE, Calif. - Jeanne Carmen, the "little country girl" who became a 1950s pinup and actress and hobnobbed with Frank Sinatra and other stars, has died. She was 77.

Carmen died of lymphoma Thursday at her Orange County home, said her son, Brandon James.

Born on Aug. 4, 1930, in Paragould, Ark., Carmen picked cotton with her family before running away at 13.

"I was just a little country girl that wanted to be a movie star," she told the Orange County Register in 1996.

Carmen was still a teenager when she came to New York and, despite having no show business experience, immediately became a dancer in a Broadway  ... continue reading

Early Member of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys Dead at 79
James Ervin "Jimmy" Porter, one of the first members of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys band, died Saturday (Dec. 15) at his home in Hoover, Ala. He was 79. In his self-published autobiography, My Life as a Musician, he tells of learning to play the electric steel guitar when he was 12 and joining Williams' group a year later. "Dad took me to Hank's and we played several songs and he sang. The only song I remember was his theme song, 'Happy Rovin' Cowboy.' I played 'Steel Guitar Rag' and a couple of other songs, and Hank offered me the job." Porter said he backed Williams "on and off" from 1941 until late 1943 or early 1944. He later played with  ... continue reading

New Movie: Honeydrippers opens 12/28
NUTS!!!! A period film! In the 50's! About American Music! In the
south!! This is right up my alley!! Sounds damn good, can't wait for
it to come out!

Roosevelt Sykes is one of several musicians who have gone by the
name "Honeydripper". He hailed from New Orleans, wailed like hell and
played one mean piano. Look into this guy when you have the time and
if you like that rompin southern barrelhouse sound, his stuff is
every bit classic.

New John Sayles Movie "Honeydripper," Opening December 28, Focuses
On Blues Of The Deep South

"Honeydripper," the new film written, directed and edited by  ... continue reading

Radio Modern 14/12/2007 Antwerp
We got there a bit late so the only band we saw where Daddy’s Darlings and the Big Bang Boys.
They were even playing their first set when we got there.
Daddy’s Darlings are a band based on the Andrew sisters and other bands of the 1940’s swing era.
These 3 ladies, backed by a 4 piece band make you wander back to the era where swing was the music that made you dance and jive, and i must admit it’s hard to stand still once they get on stage and do their thing. As an addition to the band they have the Horny Horns to back them up during a few songs. On their playlist where songs like: “ Bei mir bist du schon”, “ South American Way”,  ... continue reading
